Jiko Oven

My cooking adventures in Kenya have been very limited due to lack of resources. Using ingenuity, natural resources, and a little help from a local, I successfully created an oven from a jiko. Now there is an endless possibility of food I can create! This picture tutorial I created can even be modified for a wood fire, so it is also a great way to gourmet a camping trip.

After assembling the oven, make sure to let the sand preheat before baking, about 30 min to an hour, and cover the top of the outer sufuria once you place your product in your oven. Adjust the heat by closing (to lower the temperature), or opening (to raise the temperature) the door to the jiko. Add more charcoal when necessary and cooking times will always vary, so pay attention to what you’re baking. Bon appetit!
