As part of my regimen to improve my mind and body, I started trying some natural ways to polish a most important feature: my skin. It is the largest organ of the human body and even after tightening and toning with exercise, and taking care of it from the inside by drinking plenty of water, taking a multivitamin, and eating a healthy, balanced diet, it still needs some TLC. Now, I don’t know about you, but over-the-counter products are expensive and contain chemicals that I can’t even pronounce! I prefer just using what I have in my kitchen, it’s all there! Here are some beauty tips I have tried that work:

Honey – it is a power food for many reasons. From helping fight a cold, to boosting your glucose levels and metabolism, it’s no wonder its been used as a medicinal aid for thousands of years! For basic use on your skin, simply apply a thin layer of honey to your face and let sit for 10 mins. Gently wash off with warm water. Other healing mixes include, sugar scrub, and a mask w/banana, tomato, avocado, mango, pineapple&coconut oil, coriander&tumeric, almond milk, or apples. To use the sugar scrub, mix brown sugar or raw sugar with honey to form a paste, apply to skin in circular motion for up to a minute per area, forehead, cheeks, chin, and nose. Can also be used on other parts of the body. To make the masks, simply mash honey with one of the above ingredients to form a paste, apply to skin and let sit for between 10-15 minutes, wash with warm water. Using straight honey should be done every other day, then use the masks once a week.

Sesame,Sunflower,Olive&Coconut oil – This is for every skin type. And it is amazing. Add this to your daily cleansing routine and your skin will thank you. My favorites to use are sesame and coconut. You’ll need a washcloth, hot steamy water, and oil. Pour a generous amount of oil into your hand, rubbing it between your palms to warm it up. Apply to your face with slow, firm motions to really deep clean your pores for about 5 minutes. Soak the washcloth in the water, making sure it is hot, but not scalding. Place it over your face until it cools. Gently dab the oil off your face. Rinse the cloth in hot water, then repeat this for a total of 3 times. The oil should be mostly gone, and a little left is okay for your skin, you won’t get pimples.

Sesame and coconut oil have another wonderful benefit: teeth whitener. Think I am kidding? I swish with some every morning and it really gives me a reason to smile during the day. This method is called oil pulling. In the morning when you wake up take a tablespoon of either oil(I prefer sesame oil, but am thinking of trying a half&half mix once I can get some coconut oil)and swish vigorously in your mouth for 20 minutes. When I say vigorously I mean squeezing it between teeth, around your gums, tongue, cheeks, and every little nook and cranny you can. Avoid swallowing because you are drawing out toxins from your mouth. Other benefits besides a whiter smile include healthy gums, stronger teeth, natural relief for skin irritants, and boost energy levels. Why does it do all of these wonderful things???! Because your mouth is home to over 600 kinds of funky gunk, and is responsible for many different bodily functions. Removing toxins from your mouth will prevent them from entering your body, therefore it is a simple morning routine that will detox you daily.

Baking Soda – It has many uses from a household cleaner, baking product, pet care, to skin care. For a really good deep clean of your pores, especially blackheads, use a baking soda mask! Simply mix baking soda with enough water to form a paste, even honey instead of water, rub onto skin and leave for 15 minutes. Gently wipe off with warm water. For daily exfoliation, mix with hot water and rub in a circular motion onto skin and rinse with warm water, then apply witch hazel to cool and soothe.

For your teeth..rub baking soda paste (lemon juice + mashed strawberry + baking soda) onto dry teeth (use a cotton swab or ball and just dab off the moisture) with toothbrush and let sit for 3 mins. Brush off the mix and rinse with water, spit out, then brush teeth normally and rinse with water. This can be done once a week.

So far these three natural solutions have given me excellent and noticeable results. Quick, easy, cost-effective, and natural, it is better to just go into your kitchen and whip up a super food remedy then dish out money on a toxic product that contains ingredients you already have!
